CONIWAS met the press at the International Press Centre in Accra on Wednesday, 6th August, 2008 to share with them the opinion of the wider stakeholder group at this year’s Mole XIX conference. Mole Conference is an annual event organized by CONIWAS for stakeholders in the Water and Sanitation Sector to deliberate on issues of concern, share knowledge and look at the way forward. This year’s event took place in Koforidua from the 8th - 12th of July 2008. The theme for this year’s conference was: “Reaching the MDGs for Sanitation: Options to Expand and Accelerate Coverage”.

The seventeenth Mole Conference this year has again been successful. The theme of this year’s conference was on the “Challenges to Delivery of Water and Sanitation Services for the Poor”. In order to achieve the theme of the conference, participants and stakeholders agreed on: Prioritisation of sanitation at all levels; promoting better targeting of the ‘poor’; exploring innovative sector funding options; involving citizens for greater accountability; national reorientation on 5% capital contribution; accelerating guinea-worm eradication; ensuring efficient utilisation of water boards funds; and facilitating increase in government funding to sector…………….

The XVII Mole Conference took place between the 19th - 23rd of June 2006 at Elmina in the central region. This year's conference which was on the theme “Challenges to Delivery of Water and Sanitation Services for Peri-Urban Dwellers, Urban Poor and Rural Poor”. It addressed the various problems affecting the water and sanitation sector, and made informed decisions in order to achieve Ghana's MDG targets.

ArticleMinister Denounces 5% Community Contribution, By Emmanuel Addai – WaterAid Ghana

The Works and Housing Minister, Hackman Owusu-Agyemang has asked that the 5% community contribution made by small commnuities should be waived. The Minister disagrees on the notion of commitment through payment. There are claims that some communities cannot afford to make their contributions which makes it difficult for them to have access to portable water.
